Transportation
of natural gas, crude oil, petroleum products, water and many
other chemicals by pipelines is safest and most economical.
When a pipeline fails, the results can be devastating in terms
of loss of life, property damage, financial costs and contamination
of the environment. Without proper maintenance, every pipeline
system will eventually deteriorate. Corrosion can weaken the
structural integrity of a pipeline and make an unsafe vehicle
for transporting potentially hazardous materials. The weak
structure leads to leakages. Once leaks start to occur on
a pipe or tank, they continue to occur at an exponentially
rising rate.
|
|
|
| |
 |
Therefore,
the real time monitoring and analysis of several CP
test stations behavior spread over across the pipeline
is imperative.
Effective corrosion control can extend the life of pipelines.
The increased risk of pipeline failure far outweighs
the costs associated with installing, monitoring and
maintaining corrosion control systems like iCAP system.
Preventing pipeline deteriorations and failures, saves
money, preserves the environment and protect public
safety. As a result, the iCAP system play dominant role
in conventional CP automation.

The observations and limitations
of manual conventional C P operations are as follows: |
|
| |
- Conventional measurement are erroneous
due to influence of external IR drops depending on field
conditions
- Midpoint voltage measured once
in a month
- Every TLP (Test Lead Point) voltage
measured once in 6 months
- TR unit voltages and currents
once in 10 days
- ON PSP readings of entire pipeline
by Road/Helicopter once in 6 months
- OFF PSP readings of entire pipeline
by road once in a year
- Synchronization problems in measuring
OFF PSPs
- Industry incurring huge loss due
to pilferages/tampering/third party damages
- The improper potentials/deviations
from established potential criteria may enhance the corrosion
problems and leads to leakages and cause fire hazards.
- Detection of point of minimum protection
is difficult in a cross country pipeline
|
|
| |
The conventional
measuring intervals are very big. However, once a leak occurs
it increases exponentially. Therefore, the real time solution
like iCAP system is essential for minimizing corrosion and
other losses. The iCAP solution can minimize all the above
said limitations. It is a comprehensive field compatible solution. |

INTELLIGENT CATHODIC PROTECTION
SYSTEM (iCAP) |
|
| |
The iCAP
system is an innovative field compatible, modular wireless
embedded real time system. The conventional CP becomes intelligent
soon after interfacing iCAP. It is an addition to the conventional
CP system. Thereby, it automates all the operations and executes
in real time. It comprises of ITUs (intelligent telemetric
unit), ATRs (Automatic Transformer Rectifier), OPLs (OFF PSP
Loggers), permanent reference cells, corrosion probes, base
station, vibration sensors, etc. It continuously monitors
the pipeline operations and notifies the abnormalities, if
any, in real time. It improves the safety, productivity and
life of pipeline. It eliminates the requirement of conventional
measurements, surveys, tampering/pilferages/third party damages.
It has several applications in Oil, Gas, Water, and so on.
It is compatible to all conventional type of CP systems irrespective
of applications. |
|
| |
| INTELLIGENT TELEMETRIC UNIT
|
Intelligent
telemetric Unit is a stand alone module. It acquires data
from sensors and transmits to the central monitoring station.
It has multimode transmission capabilities. It can transmit
the data in GSM, CDMA, RF, Optical and Satellite. Therefore,
it would maintain the better data continuity and improves
the efficiency. It has several applications. It is one of
the modules of iCAP system. In addition, this can be used
as RTU of SCADA system for pipeline applications |
| |
| OFF PSP LOGGER |
OFF PSP LOGGER is a
standalone module. It helps in conducting cost effective
OFF PSP survey. It will facilitate better GPS synchronization.
It has several unique features like programmable data acquisition,
data transmission to central station through GSM and so on.
Thereby, the external IR drop influence would be efficiently
estimated. |
